My son at the Library

March 10th, 2008

My 4 year old has been reading since he was around two and doesn’t understand that not everyone can read. We were at the library today and a mother was working with her son, who was a few years older than Gavin.

The boy is trying to read a poster and says,

Where…

the…

Wild…

Things…

Are.

Gavin walks up and says, “ok, now say it all together”

The mother looks over at Gavin with a pissed off look in her eyes and the boy reads it again, much the same way.

Gavin walks away laughing and says, “pfffth.. That boy reads all weird”

Yes, my son is a pompus ass

Welcome Back

February 11th, 2008

Sorry if anyone has been trying to reach my site lately. My little server was getting overwhelmed so none of our sites were available. I turned my site off until I could move the busiest ones to a hosting service. The move is complete and hopefully that fixed the problem so my site is back on.

Baby Steps

January 15th, 2008

It’s the middle of January and the new baby will be here around the end of April. That basically gives us around two more months to turn the computer room back into a bedroom.

I’ve completed two steps off my checklist so far. I moved the phone line with the DSL signal into the basement along with the router, so now I will be able to run cat5 to the kitchen where the Wife’s computer will be.

The other thing I did was to buy a decent laptop off of Craigslist to replace my desktop PC. That way I won’t need a desk taking up space.

I think I’m going to try and move her desk and computer sometime this week, or maybe this weekend while she is out of town and I won’t be as pressured to get it done right away so she can use it.

Winter Doldrums

January 5th, 2008

I’m still alive and kicking, it’s just hard during the winter months to motivate myself to write anything (or do much of anything). At least we’ve passed the Winter Solstice and on the home stretch with more daylight every day!

Gavin is doing great as always, and the wife is doing great with her pregnancy. We should be expecting HIM around the end of April.

Having a new child here in 4 months hasn’t sunk in yet, especially since we haven’t done ANYTHING to prepare! His bedroom is an “office/computer networking center” right now and everything in it has to go somewhere else in the house. The problem is that I also need to move other things in order to make room for this stuff. It’s a house sized game of a sliding number puzzle.

I’ve started moving things around a little and I know as soon as I can make the one big move (The Wife’s computer into the kitchen) everything else will just fall into place.

Wish me luck.

From the Completely Unnecessary Department

November 30th, 2007

I came across this child accessory and cannot believe it was designed by a man.

Behold, the Tinkle Tube!

I think I would put my kid on a leash before I made him use this device, less embarrassing for sure.

Still Here (Somewhat)

November 12th, 2007

The at-home dad convention was a lot of fun. It’s nice to spend a weekend with a bunch of people where the conversation killer question, “So, what do you do?” never comes up.

Here are some pictures of Gavin at the Hockey game.

Picture 2

I know I haven’t written much but I’ve been feeling really unmotivated about doing much of anything since the time change. Today I’m going to donate blood (free shirt!!) and then buy some St. John’s Wort, it usually seems to help a little.

At the Stay at Home Dad Convention

November 2nd, 2007

Slept until 8am, liking this convention already and it hasn’t even started yet! People walking in the halls and the elevator opening woke me up so I still haven’t let go 100%. Maybe tomorrow…

I’m Not a Burger!

October 29th, 2007

I was playing with Gavin, picking him up pretending to eat his belly while saying, “I’m going to eat a Gavinburger! Give me some ketchup!” He said, “I’m not a burger don’t eat me!” I asked him why wasn’t he a burger and he answers,

“Burgers don’t poop”

Go Blues!

October 20th, 2007

Tonight the wife and I are going to take Gavin to his first Blues game! This will either be a lot of fun or the worst idea I’ve had so far as a parent.

For those of you that don’t follow the NHL (and you should), the Blues are off to a great start this year after two disappointing seasons and are exciting to watch again!

Hopefully I’ll remember to bring the cheap-o pocket camera and get some pictures to post later.

If It Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It

October 8th, 2007

I got a phone call the other day from a woman who wanted me to fix her computer. She admitted that she doesn’t know anything about them but hers is broken and she can’t do anything with it. I ask to to describe to me what it does do and she says, “I can’t do anything, I turn it on and I get a blue screen with errors”. I tell her to find all the cds that came with it and bring it by.

I plug it in and everything works perfectly. It’s really slow though and I remove a ton of spyware (their PC Tools spyware remover apparently is useless!) I turn off a bunch of auto start programs and set the BIOS for “Performance” and it seems to be working a lot faster now, but still no crashes.

I think I’m going to have to take it to their house and check it. I’m thinking it has to be a hardware conflict with a device they are using.
