3 Year Old Update

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

No, this update isn’t three years behind. I know I don’t post much but I’m not that bad. Gavin turned three and I wanted to write about the things he can/can’t do at this stage in his life.

Things I can brag about.
Can read simple children’s books he hasn’t seen before.
Can spell 3 letter and some 4 letter words.
90% potty trained. Can’t wipe himself and has accidents in his pull-ups at night. Daytime is perfect.
Says stuff like, “That triangle mark is an apostrophe, which means ownership, so Imo’s pizza means the pizza belongs to Imo.”

Things he can’t do well.

Doesn’t have the best motor skills but I think that’s my fault. I’m too afraid of him getting hurt at the playground since we don’t have a spare kid yet. :)
Whatever part of the brain that governs self-control is about 1% of what it should be. He will be in tears saying, “I can’t stop touching Mom’s purse!” while continuing to do so. I know he is only three but this kinda worries me. At least he knows he is doing something wrong, a lot of times he will run down the hall and sit in his room, I ask what’s wrong and he will say something like, “I put the toy in my mouth again and it was a bad thing to do so I’m going to sit in my room and think about it.”
He has a problem playing by himself and I get tired of being his entertainment committee, times like this I wonder if it would be better to have him in day care to get used to playing and listening to other people.

Dumbass Parent of the Day

Getting all worked up about how well your 15 year old girl plays soccer is pretty bad, as is yelling at her about her performance, but all the other things that happened on the way home are even worse.

Taking a Break

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

I’m worn out.
I’ve been taking care of sick people for the past three weeks, without the “luxury” of myself being sick and waited upon. The wife seems to be over her illness and noticed how I needed a break so she is taking Gavin out shopping for the night.

What am I going to do with this time to myself?
Call up some friends?
Watch a movie?
Surf for porn?

How about REBUILD THE PRINT SERVER!!

Yes! I am taking this time to get the networked printer working again.

I’m such a hopeless nerd.

Do the Hippy Hippy Shake

Edited to add:
Gavin went back to his Doctor today and seems to be fine. Apparently it’s a common thing with toddlers with fevers called Febrile seizure. It is the scariest experience I’ve been through so far in my life so I wanted to link to a site that has a nice description of Febrile seizures so if you do experience it with your child you will have an idea of what is happening and try to have a clearer head than I did.

———————————————————-

After Gavin woke up from his nap we went to sit on the couch so he could relax, watch some of his shows (yay DVR!) and I can give him his medicine. He drinks the amoxicillin like a champ and I lay him down to put the pain drops in his ears. I do some laundry and come back 10 minutes later to get the other ear. I tell him to lay down on the other side and put one drop in and he starts SHRIEKING! I tell him to just calm down I need to get a few more drops in, his body gets real tense and I tell him to quit fighting me and just let me put the drops in that we did them just a few minutes ago and they didn’t hurt a bit. I line him up again and then I notice that his eyes are rolling back in his head and he is shaking all over.

I realize he is having some sort of seizure so I pick him up and call 911. As I’m talking to the dispatcher Gavin is shaking harder and harder, making weird noises and TURNING BLUE! His ears turn a dark purple and his face and lips are blue.
After what seems to be 5 minutes (but probably a minute or less) the seizure stops, he goes limp and starts crying. The ambulance shows up with one of the guys from my part-time job (that’s for another post) and they take over.

We get to the hospital (gotta love living 2 blocks from the fire station and less than a mile from a Hospital) and after spending 5 minutes with the nurses poking and prodding a blood draw needle in his arm another nurse says, “Why don’t we get a sample from his I.V. draw?” so Gavin got a slight break from the prodding.

The Doctor said the seizure was probably due to a spike in his fever (it was 104 when we got there and just an hour or so earlier it was 98 at the Doctor’s) and he seems to be fine now. The also took x-rays and noticed he has a bit of pneumonia so he will be getting a stronger antibiotic and another trip to his Doctor tomorrow.

He’s napping again and I just hope he beats this soon, I don’t like it when he’s down and out.

Earache My Eye

Monday, April 2nd, 2007

Gavin hardly ever gets sick but when he does at least he gets its all out of the way at once. He also gets sick almost the exact same time every year so I can plan my schedule around it. lol

Last week he had a fever and a bad cough and beat that in a few short days and now he has two ear infections so nobody is sleeping well in this house. Took him to the Doctor and am waiting for superslow Walgreen’s to take the stuff off the shelf and put it in a bag so I can start giving Gavin some antibiotics. Maybe with the pain drops I can get more than a solid 15 minutes of sleep in a row tonight.
