Back in Business

Wednesday, December 28th, 2005

I’m back up and running on the new server! I still have a lot of tweaking to do but that will have to wait until tomorrow.

Inside/outside

Wednesday, December 28th, 2005

Yesterday was really nice. When its 60 degrees outside the last week of December you need to take advantage of it so Aubrey, Gavin and I took a walk down to Riverfront Park to enjoy the day. I really enjoy taking him down there because it gives him the chance to run free in a large area without me having to tell him no all the time, plus, since the park is about a mile long he can get lots of exercise. (after reading that, it sounds like I’m talking about taking a dog to the park. Oh well, same difference in this case. lol)

I’m still working on upgrading the server. Some changes I’ve made is to switch from Debian Sarge to Ubuntu Breezy. The reasoning is that I bought a USB hard drive enclosure for backups and for some reason could not get debian to see it. After messing with it for a while I tried Ubuntu and it fired right up and since Ubuntu is almost the same as debian I’m not having any trouble setting the rest of it up, I just need the time.

I got another free computer! YAY!! A friend called me up yesterday and said he wanted to get rid of a Mac he had since he didn’t know how to use it and didn’t want to learn, he wasn’t even sure what kind it was. I kindly took it off his hands and now I am the proud owner of a 733 G4 tower to keep my dual G4 450 company. Gotta love having friends who are macphobic.

Your Serve

Friday, December 23rd, 2005

Well I’m still playing around with the new server. Haven’t come close to bringing it to production since I decided to bring in SSL and SSL doesn’t like to play nice with virtual hosts. I have found a few workarounds and am experimenting when I have time, and I feel I am getting close to a workable solution. Hopefully with Aubrey being off a week I can find some real time to get down to business either with the new server or with GTA San Andreas. Its been a long time since I’ve sat down and gamed.

Sick Days

Tuesday, December 20th, 2005

Its been a crazy few days here so I haven’t been able to work on the new server as much as I wanted to. Gavin came down with a bit of a cold Thursday night and is just now hitting the tail end of it. It wasn’t that bad, just a stuffy nose and some coughing with a slight fever Friday night. Just enough to make him not be able to sleep and as you know, if the baby can’t sleep, ain’t nobody sleeping.

He seemed to be a lot better yesterday and since I was able to sleep all night I felt better too. So last night we left the house to do some more shopping and decided to eat at Red Lobster. Gavin had the popcorn shrimp but he didn’t care for the bland ketchup they put with the kid’s meal, he wanted my horseradishy cocktail sauce they put with mine. Here’s how the dinner went, he takes a bite of cocktail sauce dipped shrimp, says “oooh hot spicy!” takes a drink and says “MORE”.

I still don’t understand how people try to punish their kids by making them eat hot sauce, flavorful foods are one of the joys of life, why would you train your children to think badly of it? Besides Gavin would probably go out of his way to get into trouble so he could have another bite.

Boring Computer Nerd Stuff

Saturday, December 17th, 2005

A while ago a friend gave me a Dell Poweredge 4200 server. He said he couldn’t get it to work right and asked if I wanted to play with it. I finally got a chance to mess with it and the problem seemed to be a stick of bad RAM that didn’t have any business being there in the first place. This site (and a few others) are running on a lowly p2 233 using some craptastic IDE drive I salvaged from some pc and sometimes it can get a big bogged down, so now that I have the option of moving the server to something a bit more beefy I think I’m going to do it.

The problem is that I want to do a fresh OS install and an upgrade at that, so I’ve been playing around on the server installing the apps and trying to figure out the best ways to move the data and config files over without the new versions of the software puking all over them.

Anyway, the files seem to be backed up and compressed now so it’s time to get back to business.

Eat Boogers!

Tuesday, December 13th, 2005

Gavin and I were playing a game the other day where I would ask him if he liked to eat something and he would reply “Yummy” Our game went something like this.

Gavin, do you like to eat raisins? “Yummy!”
Gavin, do you like to eat chicken? “Yummy!”
Gavin, do you like to eat hot dogs? “Yummy!”
Gavin do you like to eat boogers?

And he let out the biggest belly laugh I have ever heard. He probably laughed for 5 minutes at how silly the idea of eating boogers was. I then started over naming other foods and threw in ‘poop’ and he started laughing and laughing again.

I just thought it was pretty interesting that at only 20 months he could understand the absurdness of the whole thing. I think he’s going to have one sick sense of humor growing up, but then again, how can he not living with me and Aubrey?

Dumbass Parent of the Day

I’m sorry Miss, you have to be 21 to enter the strip club.

“OK, he’ll just wait in the car.”

I Come With A Lot Of Excess Baggage

Tuesday, December 6th, 2005

Before Gavin was born I picked out the coolest diaper bag, it was a messenger style bag by Eddie Bauer. It was very simple and non-girly looking, black with a leather flap and it could everything I needed.

The problem I’m having now is I don’t need to carry such a large thing around anymore since all I need is a diaper or two, some wipes, snacks, and a cup, but I don’t have anything else to put it in. If I was a woman with a big purse I could cram his stuff in there and be good to go.

I was hoping some other dads out there have come across the same issue and have some options for me. Maybe a camera bag, laptop bag, the plastic bags from the grocery store? Please send me ideas!!
